If sound waves don't travel through space, why do radio waves do this?

I think I kindof know why this is, but I'd like to hear a proper explanation. Also, if you transmitted a signal within the audible frequency range (20-20,000 Hz), could you actually hear any of it with your ears? What would it sound like? Thanks!
